Charleston International Airport moves about 6.3 million passengers a year, and it is in the middle of the largest expansion in its history.

Concourse C, $100 million

More than 40,000 square feet of new passenger space plus 23,000 square feet of operations space. New gates, new concessions, new passenger amenities, and international arrival capability. Structural work is complete and crews are on interior finishes and building systems now.

International arrival capability is the phrase to notice. It changes what routes the airport can pursue.

Parking Garage 3, $348 million

Six levels and 7,200 total spaces, split 5,164 private vehicle and 2,036 rental car. It includes a consolidated rental car facility, a customer service building, fueling facilities and a car wash. Structural construction is largely complete.

The rest

The terminal expansion picked up $3.7 million through the FAA Airport Infrastructure Grants program, part of $870 million awarded to 339 airports across 44 states and two territories. On the airfield, the Alpha West terminal apron is being expanded with new storm drainage and lighting, and a Virtual Ramp Control Center is planned.

Major construction is expected to wrap in 2027.

Why a local business should care

Two reasons, and neither is about flying.

The first is jobs. A project this size employs people for years, and those people live in North Charleston, Ladson, Summerville and Goose Creek. They eat lunch somewhere.

The second is what an airport with international arrivals does to a metro over a decade. It changes which companies will consider relocating here, which changes the employment base, which changes the households. Charleston has been on that trajectory for twenty years and this is the next step in it.

If you sell to households, the airport expansion is a long-dated bet on your customer base getting bigger.
