TSA said in September that Charleston International Airport would be among the next airports added to Gateside by TSA PreCheck, which lets eligible members apply for a pass to go past security without a boarding pass. The October announcement never came: TSA expanded the program to hundreds of airports, scaled it back within days, and now says it is in an operational assessment phase at 13 airports. Charleston is not one of them and there is no way to apply.
Why this matters here
A walk-in pass would send local residents through security to eat and shop at the terminal, which is new traffic for airport concessions rather than borrowed traffic. For now that upside is on hold, and it is the second federal screening program Charleston has seen reversed this year.
