Charleston County staff have recommended spending $175,000 to study pedestrian and bicycle safety on King Street, part of a roughly $3 million package of smaller infrastructure and safety projects. County Council was expected to take up the recommendations Tuesday night. The study would look at traffic patterns, roadway capacity, pedestrian and bicycle activity and crash records, and officials said a road diet, which can trade vehicle lanes for bike and pedestrian space, is one option they may examine.
Why this matters here
King Street shop and restaurant owners have a direct stake in how many lanes and how much curb that street keeps. Nothing is approved and no design has been chosen, which makes right now the cheap moment for merchants to get on the record, rather than after a plan is drawn.
